Trip details

Wake to the Matterhorn every morning from a single base in Zermatt, deep in Switzerland’s Valais, with half board included and some of the finest walking in the Alps on your doorstep. Situated at the foot of the famous Matterhorn and surrounded by thirty-eight 4,000m high mountains, (more than any other village in the Alps) Zermatt, is the ideal base for your walking holiday in Switzerland. With a selection of over 200km of trails, walks are as fascinating as they are varied and always benefiting from the most stunning backdrops.

You choose your walk each morning, from gentle lakeside paths to full mountain days, so a party walking at different speeds can still meet for dinner. Let the railways and cable cars do the climbing, and even the gentlest option puts you at 3,883 metres on the Klein Matterhorn. In Zermatt the famous views come as standard, whatever pace you walk.

Day 3 · 18km/11.2miApproaching the Matterhorn

Approaching the Matterhorn

All walkers based in Zermatt will surely want to get as close as possible to the magnificent Matterhorn. As one of the most iconic peaks in the world, it has inspired countless stories, legends, and anecdotes that capture its awe-inspiring presence.

From Schwarzsee you can climb to the Hornlihutte, it was here that the first climbers to conquer the Matterhorn set off for their ascent on 14 July 1865. If you are content to get no closer and don’t wish to climb, simply pick up the route description from Schwarzsee following the Matterhorn Trail.

This trail offers a close-up view of this majestic mountain returning by a pleasant valley path. You can find a series of information panels that delve into various aspects of the Matterhorn’s rich cultural and natural history.

Day 4 · 7km/4.3miZermatt's Lake District

Zermatt's Lake District

In the Lake district these would be tarns, or locharns in Scotland, in Valais they are mirrors that reflect the Matterhorn!
Zermatt has over 150 lakes and our route leads past the lakes of Stellisee, Grindjisee and Leisee. Each unique and home to a wealth of alpine flora.
This route is from Sunnegga to include the Marmot trail, but a cable car ride from there up to Blauherd can save a stiff climb.

Day 5 · 11km/6.8miThe Klein Matterhorn & Gorner Gorge

The Klein Matterhorn & Gorner Gorge

Visit the highest viewing platform in Europe, detour to a mountain hut, then descend mountain slopes to a narrow gorge where a steady head is needed. Having reached the top of Klein Matterhorn, you will want to spend a good hour there. Admire the panorama, with nearby Breithorn especially impressive, and Cervinia in Italy far below the summer skiing run. You have the option to walk around the Glacier Grotto, reached through a tunnel.

Day 6 · 20km/12.4miThe Trift & Hohbalmen Circuit

The Trift & Hohbalmen Circuit

Every walker dreams of spotting edelweiss in the alpine pastures, and along this trail, that dream comes true. Walkers can even see these beautiful flowers at eye level. The walk leads to one of the finest vantage points in the Zermatt region, offering a stunning 360° panorama.

The edelweiss can be admired in various habitats in the Zermatt mountains. While it won’t grow on ground formed of crystalline rock, it flourishes on calcareous sediments despite the often harsh conditions.

Experience a magical moment on the climb up to Trift as the pinnacle of the Matterhorn emerges unexpectedly from behind a hilltop. Who will spot it first? The path then continues to one of Zermatt’s finest viewpoints at Hohbalmen. The panorama is breathtaking, featuring the north face of the Matterhorn with the Zmuttgrat ridge, the Breithorn, Liskamm, and the Monte Rosa massif.

Enjoy a leisurely walk up the Zmutt valley with wonderful views of the Matterhorn and back across the valley to the Monte Rosa and Liskamm. You’ll head up the right side of the valley with incredible mountain panorama and plenty of path-side flora; you may even see marmots on the rocks by the river!

Day 8 · —Depart Zermatt

Depart Zermatt

Say fond farewells to Zermatt as you depart on the train. If you would like to stay longer, we are happy to arrange extra nights.

Extending your holiday

Stay a few extra nights and there is no need to choose between Zermatt’s high mountain routes and its quieter trails. Life moves at a gentler pace here, and the Matterhorn looks different every hour of the day.

What our travellers say

Hotel Europe &Spa in Zermatt was excellent – top tip; they have an electric car and will pick up and drop off from railway station on arrival and departure. Cicerone travel book on Zermatt & Saas Fee is very good with well described and various walks & other useful info. The App Swisstopo has excellent maps. The Glacier express is good but the local trains (despite the need for changes to do the same route) is very good and usually less busy. We were not sure the extra expense of the GE worth it

James Langtry

I believe there is a winning combination that blends the wonderful atmosphere of the walks with an excellent hotel – to chill out after strenuous effort.

Dr Pechansky

Booking and communication very good. Walks were easy to follow. Great hotel and transport straightforward.

A Valued Customer

Everything was fantastic

Mr Clarke

The preparation and information provided in good time before departure was very useful. The accommodation was good and the staff friendly. The half price travel and cable car facility was very helpful.

A Valued Customer

A lovely family run hotel, with amazing food and well positioned to get to all the stations, gondolas and funicular. The walking notes offered a variety of different hikes and were easy to follow, which we did using the app. We would recommend using that as it was useful to see the location of the next junction and how far we had come.

Mrs Styles

The entire holiday was excellent – in particular arrangements with and support from Headwater, the hotel (accommodation, food and staff), the selection of walks, the Headwater app and most of all the scenery

A Valued Customer

Great accommodation, good walking, enjoyed using the app

Mr Miller

We were walking at the base of the Matterhorn. Absolutely breathtaking scenery. The hotel was fantastic. Great service. We upgraded to a room with a Matterhorn view and balcony which was fabulous.
The food at the hotel was delicious too. All the walks were fantastic and was always an option for easier or harder walks. The app worked well.

Frequently asked questions

Are the mountain railways included?

They are not in the holiday price and are paid locally, but they are what makes this holiday work. The Gornergrat railway and the Klein Matterhorn cable car both feature in our suggested walks, and flight inclusive packages include a Swiss Half Fare Card which halves the fare on most of them.

Is Zermatt really car free?

There are no petrol engines in the village. You arrive by train, take a small electric taxi to the hotel, and after that it is footsteps.

Will I see the Matterhorn every day?

Weather permitting, yes. It is not a single day’s payoff on this holiday, it is the view you wake up to. Zermatt is surrounded by thirty-eight peaks over 4,000 metres, more than any other village in the Alps.

What else is there besides walking?

The Matterhorn Museum is built underground beneath the village square and holds the rope that broke on the first descent in 1865. Behind it lies the Hinterdorf, the old quarter of timber granaries raised on stone stilts. The hotel also has a spa with jacuzzi, sauna and steam baths. Swiss rail connections are excellent, making it very easy to explore outside Zermatt.
