Frequently asked questions

Not all Headwater holidays are suitable for travelling by car. Many European mainland holidays work very well as a self drive option, particularly where accommodation is easily accessible and daily driving is minimal. However, some itineraries – such as island holidays requiring flights or ferries, or routes designed around rail connections – are less suitable. The best option for your trip will always be confirmed at the time of enquiry.

In most cases, a car is not required during your holiday itself. Headwater holidays are carefully planned so that walking or cycling routes begin and end close to your accommodation, with luggage transfers arranged between hotels where applicable. That said, travelling by car can really complement certain holidays, such as twin centre itineraries, single centre holidays, or trips with optional sightseeing extensions. Having your own vehicle allows greater flexibility to explore the surrounding area, visit nearby towns or attractions, and make the most of your time before, during or after your holiday. While rarely essential, a car can be a valuable addition for guests who enjoy independent exploration alongside their planned routes.

As this can vary by itinerary, your Headwater travel expert will confirm whether luggage transfers are included while planning your holiday and will ensure all details are clearly outlined in your final holiday information.

Electric vehicles can be suitable for many self drive Headwater holidays, particularly in regions with good charging infrastructure. However, availability of charging points can vary by country, region and accommodation. If you plan to travel in an electric vehicle, we recommend discussing this with your sales consultant at the time of enquiry so this can be considered alongside route planning and hotel selection.

If you are driving abroad, you will usually need:
β€’ A valid driving licence
β€’ Proof of vehicle insurance
β€’ Vehicle registration documents
β€’ A passport valid for travel
Additional requirements can apply depending on the country you are visiting, such as low emission zone registrations, safety equipment, or hire vehicle documentation. As regulations can change, it is always your responsibility to check the latest requirements for each country you will be driving through before departure.
